Why is CFA Level I hard?
- Breadth. Ten topics, from ethics rules to bond convexity. Most people forget early topics by the time they finish the last one unless they review as they go.
- Speed. About 90 seconds per question means formulas and calculator steps must be automatic, not looked up in your head.
- Close distractors. Wrong answers come from realistic slips: the right formula with one wrong input, or a rule that applies in a slightly different case. Try a few sample questions to see the style.
- No published pass mark. You can't aim for a known number, so you need a safety margin in every big topic (more on the passing score).
What the candidates who pass do differently
- They start early enough to cover the curriculum and still have six to eight weeks for review and mocks.
- They test themselves from the first week, with questions after every module, instead of reading only.
- They keep earlier topics fresh with spaced repetition, so Quant from month one is still there in month five.
- They sit several full, timed mocks and review every mistake before exam day.
Our 20-week study plan builds all four in.
How hard is Level I? FAQ
- Is CFA Level 1 hard?
- Yes, mainly because of its breadth. Over the last 7 exam windows, between 39% and 45% of candidates passed (43% on average). The individual concepts are mostly introductory, but there are ten topics and about 90 seconds per question.
- How many hours do you need to study for CFA Level 1?
- CFA Institute suggests around 300 hours per level. At 15 hours a week that is about 20 weeks; candidates with a finance or accounting degree often need less, career changers more.
- Is CFA Level 1 harder than a university finance exam?
- Each idea is usually no harder than an undergraduate course, but the exam covers about as much as several courses at once and gives you about 90 seconds per question, so recall speed and stamina matter more than depth.
- Which CFA Level 1 topic is the hardest?
- Candidates most often name Financial Statement Analysis and Fixed Income for their volume of rules and calculations, and Ethics for its fine distinctions. Quantitative Methods gets a bigger weight from 2027, so it matters more than before.
- Can I pass CFA Level 1 without a finance background?
- Yes. Plenty of engineers, scientists and career changers pass. Plan for more than 300 hours, start with Quantitative Methods and Financial Statement Analysis because later topics build on them, and practise with exam-style questions from the start.
