Pieter van der Berg, CFA, trades commodity futures for a proprietary trading firm. Shortly before a cocoa futures contract expires, he quietly buys up most of the cocoa that is eligible for delivery against the contract while also holding a large long futures position. Traders with short futures positions are forced to buy back their contracts from him at inflated prices. Did van der Berg violate the CFA Institute Standards of Professional Conduct?

Using 31 monthly returns for Stock X and 41 monthly returns for Stock Y, an analyst finds sample variances of 0.00330 for X and 0.00182 for Y. He tests H0: σX² = σY² versus Ha: σX² ≠ σY² at the 5% significance level, assuming independent, normally distributed returns. How Level I questions are built
Every Level I question is multiple choice with three options and one best answer. Most stems are short and end with a prompt such as “is closest to:” for a calculation or “is most likely:” for a concept. Numerical options are listed in ascending order, and the wrong ones usually come from a realistic slip: the right formula with one wrong input, a missed compounding step or the wrong sign.
Ethics questions often describe a short situation and ask whether someone has broken the Standards, and if so which one. The other topics mix direct concept questions with one- or two-step calculations, so speed with your calculator matters as much as knowing the formula.
Getting the most from sample questions
- Answer before you look at the options when you can; it stops a plausible distractor from steering you.
- Read the explanations for the questions you got right too. They often show a faster method.
- When you miss one, go back to that topic's study guide or the formula sheet before trying more questions.
- Single questions show you the style; a full mock shows whether you can keep it up for 90 questions against the clock.
Practice question FAQ
Q.01Where can I find free CFA Level 1 practice questions?
This page has free Level I questions from every topic, each with a full explanation, and no sign-up is needed. CheapMocks also has a free full-length 180-question mock exam, and CFA Institute gives registered candidates its own practice questions and mock exams in the Learning Ecosystem.
Q.02How many practice questions should I do for CFA Level 1?
There is no fixed number, but most candidates who pass work through well over a thousand questions and several full mocks. Quality matters more than volume: read every explanation, and go back to the lesson for any topic where you keep missing questions.
Q.03What score should I aim for on practice questions?
CFA Institute does not publish the pass mark, and it is set again for each exam window. Consistently scoring 70% or more across topics on fresh, exam-style questions and timed mocks is a common target that leaves a safety margin.
Q.04Are these the same format as the real exam?
Yes. Level I questions are stand-alone multiple choice with three options (A, B, C) and one best answer. You get about 90 seconds per question: 180 questions in two 135-minute sessions.
Q.05Are these official CFA Institute questions?
No. Every question is written by CheapMocks for the 2026 and 2027 curricula. CheapMocks is not affiliated with CFA Institute.
