Lesson 9 of 9 · 15 min
Integrated cases: reading an FX and capital-flow brief
A currency brief combines survey shares, a list of regimes, a saving-investment table and a capital-restriction rule; each part is read with a fixed method and the pieces then explain one another.
In short
- Market-structure facts to anchor on: swaps are the largest instrument, financial clients exceed interbank, and non-financial clients are a small minority of volume.
- Name a regime from its legal tell: legal commitment plus full backing is a currency board; another country's currency is dollarization; a band of up to about ±2% is a target zone.
- A pegged or crawling currency follows its anchor against third currencies, so a move in the anchor transmits to the pegged one.
- The trade balance is (S − I) + (T − G); a deficit is matched by a capital-account surplus, and asset prices or exchange rates do the short-run adjusting.
- An unremunerated reserve requirement lowers the effective return on the full deposit; controls carry administrative costs and damage confidence.
